The First Royal Dragoons portray the
Regiment in the uniform of the period from 1796 - 1811. The uniform
is that of Field Order with the shako watering caps that replaced
the decrepit cocked hats when the Regiment was on campaign in the
Peninsular. We have several troops which field either as Mounted
Dragoons, Dismounted Dragoons, Galloper Gun or Provosts. We camp
under canvas and enjoy a varied membership of enthusiasts from all
over Britain and in Europe.
We formed in 1994 initially performing a mounted skill at arms
display which took us all over the UK and eventually joined the
Napoleonic Association where we expanded into living history and re
enactment. Since we formed, our hobby has taken us all over Europe
and we have enjoyed many events supporting the Armed Forces at
several regional shows and tattoos.
The First Royal Dragoons began their military career as The Tangier
Horse back in 1661 and in 1683 became the King's Own Royal Regiment
of Dragoons. By 1690 they were the Royal Regiment of Dragoons and in
1751 the title was simplified to 1st (Royal) Dragoons or 1RD.
The 1RD fought throughout the Peninsular War and had the singular
honour of forming the English contingent of the Union Brigade at
Waterloo. They rode to immortal glory that day in the finest company
of the Scots Greys and The Inniskilling Dragoons. Together they
shattered d'Erlons Corp and took several prized Eagles.
