The 79th Highlanders were raised in 1793
by Alan Cameron of Erracht at the outbreak of the French
Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. They were soon in action in
Flanders and went on to fight in the West Indies, the Netherlands
again, Egypt, Copenhagen, the Peninsula and in the Waterloo
campaign. They particularly distinguished themselves at Fuentes
d'Ono, Burgos, Toulouse, Quatre Bras and Waterloo. We are proud to
represent this famous regiment.
We travel all across the UK and Europe
attending various events, including battle proms at stately homes (a
nice picnic in the park!), battle re-enactments (a chance to fire
guns and have a laugh with your mates in the process), and history
festivals, such as the Dickens Festival in Rochester or the Ostend
at Anchor event (which are a good chance to pose around, and get
your face in the paper!).
We work closely with the Napoleonic era
frigate the Grand Turk and do a variety of different events with
them, including honour guards and festivals of the sea, which are
always a great experience.
We are based at Fort Amherst in Chatham,
where we practice our drill and safety training. However, after this
work is done, we then have a great party in the evening!
We pride ourselves on our living history
aspect and as such we welcome all the family and everyone is welcome
to come and join in the fun with us, and there are many roles for
people to do, depending on what you want to do.
We have a very close group and always keep
in touch for meals, drinks, parties and BBQ’s throughout the year.
So, no matter who you are, you are sure of a friendly welcome and
something to do in the 79th.
