Prior to the Napoleonic
Wars the French army had a well established Military Survey
department. Whilst surveying in Britain was initially conducted
in an ad-hoc manner from the 1745 Scottish rebellion through to
the formation of the Royal Military Surveyors and Draughtsmen (RMSD)
forerunners of Ordnance Survey. Surveying in British, French and
German armies was mainly conducted by engineers. Our aim is the
study of Military Surveying and Cartography from 1791-1815. The
organisation and uniforms of engineers and work construction
defences, conducting sieges and recognisance.
