Grande Armee

We use a version of Sam Mustafa ’s Grande Armee rules, which preserve historical realism, and are very quick to understand and place emphasis on the problems of Army Command & Control. We have reduced Sam’s scale by a third which enables us to re-fight Eylau on a 4'x5'table. The tactical unit is a brigade using a 5cmx5cm base. We have also developed a hex-based campaign system using 6mm figures. Each 5cm hex represents 10 kilometres and in this game the tactical unit is a Division. For tactical games we use 15mm figures.

Kriegsspeal

These map rules were adapted in 1811 by von Reisswitz, a Prussian Army officer, from his father's sandtable wargame. Von Reisswitz widely recognised as the genesis of wargaming as a hobby, was a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. Kriegsspiel was formally first published in 1824, and was adopted as the training system for the Prussian army. Despite their age, these rules are sophisticated and elegant in their mechanisms, and look as fresh now as they did 190 years ago. The Kriegsspiel rules are a 'must' for any wargamer or student of military history interested in adding dimensions to their gaming that tabletop battles just cannot get close to.

In addition to the rules Toofatlardies have published a full-colour version of the Meckel Map, designed in the 19th Century for use with the Kriegsspiel rules, and a book of 12 scenarios set on that map. Much more additional material is planned for the future, and Irregular Miniatures are producing starter sets of Kriegsspiel blocks at discount rates.

During 2008 the Wargame Section aims to run a series of 'in period' Kriegsspiel games as they would have been played by Prussian officers during the later part of the Napoleonic War. Although there is no evidence that they were played in Britain during that period, officers such as George Wilson were attached to the Prussian army and may well have come into contact with von Reisswitz, and on that basis members of the wargame section have styled themselves a bunch of eccentric officers trying out a draft translation from the German rules!
